Job Description

Cree is looking for a self-motivated, hands-on electrical engineer to lead the LED Lighting power electronics team and to drive innovation in the industry leading LED based lighting products. Individual will work within cross functional groups consisting of marketing, engineering and manufacturing to research, develop, design, qualify and introduce component and integrated component products and systems into production. Responsibilities will include support of product introduction, on-site technical support, development of new approaches to LED drivers, mentoring of junior engineers, participation in design reviews and detailed problem solving for all products. A successful candidate will be a resourceful problem solver who is able to work around technical obstacles and will be adept at the implementation of practical solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

-Provide leadership to the Cree LED lighting power electronics team. Take ownership of product development schedules, priorities, risk assessments and design quality for the power electronics design team. Give clear and immediate performance feedback to individual contributors. Build Cree culture in the team.
-Lead, teach and mentor in all aspects of power supply design including topology selection and architecture, magnetic design, loss calculation and measurement, power device selection, EMI filter design and feedback control loops.
-Drive design rigor and adherence to the Cree design process to ensure that new LED drivers are released on time and that they meet the performance specification, cost target and lifetime requirements.
-Work with Cree product and design engineers to maximize performance of external ODM partners. Guide and direct the team to handoff Cree designs and work with external partners to quickly and successfully release derivative designs.
-Provide high-level insight at design reviews and into difficult problems across all active projects.
-Communicate project status clearly and regularly to Senior Management team. Leverage global resources to achieve the best results for Cree.
-Work directly with Manufacturing Operations and Engineering to ramp new products and processes into production.
-Interface with component suppliers to evaluate second source components and resolve technical issues that may arise in manufacturing.
-Identify, initiate and implement solutions for process/product development that improves performance, reduces cost, strengthens yield, and increases capability.
-Provide technical support and instruction to staff and customers regarding equipment standards, and help solve specific, difficult in-service engineering problems.
-Provide training to other personnel to improve overall capabilities and knowledge.
-Work across company functional organizations to ensure project success and develop next generation products.

Required:

-M.S. in Electrical Engineering or other technical related field.
-12+ years in power electronic design with working knowledge in high frequency magnetic design, control, topology selection and simulation.
-Demonstrated and proven ability to lead power electronics product development teams in a fast-paced, cost driven industry.
-Ability to communicate complex technical issues clearly to the rest of the organization, including peers on other engineering teams and senior managers.
-Strong technical background in electronic device performance and passive components.
-Ability to work independently and be self-sufficient while managing multiple projects, tasks and individual contributors.
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
-Ability and desire to mentor members of the power electronics team.
-Self-starter with strong personal work ethic. Must have a "whatever it takes" attitude.
-Willing to travel - both domestic and international.

Preferred:

-PhD in Power Electronics related field of study
-Experience with LED products a plus.
